MORE ABOUT THE FOLD:
Directed by Matt Lambert from a script by Matt Lambert, Polly Frost, and Ray Sawhill, THE FOLD is a comic, dreamy, and philosophical six-part web series — season one of a projected ongoing mini-epic.
Part sci-fi, part sex comedy, part art movie, THE FOLD interweaves stories involving a time-traveling geek with Aspergers Syndrome, an investigation by a Gaming Babes Magazine reporter, a sex-cult guru, a right-wing CEO determined to remake history, and a New Jersey hot tub salesman for whom things mysteriously start to go the right way.
Lambert, Frost, and Sawhill love the webseries form and see it as an exciting new format: for its sense of time, for the way it takes advantage of new distribution channels, and for the way it expresses the values of the new media and the mindset of a new generation.
We’re hoping “The Fold” is a little bit “Barbarella,” a little bit “Revenge of the Nerds,” a little bit “Liquid Sky.” Fantasy, sex, humor; storylines, fresh characters, and tension … Lambert, Frost, and Sawhill wanted to create a webseries that has the spirit of ’70’s midnight movies.
And all on a budget of just $8000.
“The web serial is a great format to work in, but so far I’ve seen it mostly used just for sketch comedy, or longer stories that really feel more like features that have been chopped up scene by scene and forced into the webisodic format. With THE FOLD, I think we were able to make a larger-than-life story with an arc and intensity particularly suited to the rhythms of a webseries,” says director and co-writer Matt Lambert. Adds co-writer and co-producer Polly Frost: “Why shouldn’t a webseries have the artistic ambitions of full-scale movies?”
Lambert and Frost, together with co-writer Ray Sawhill, dreamed up THE FOLD as a way to combine some of their favorite influences: the inventive scrappiness of Roger Corman, the straight-to-DVD flamboyance of Takashi Miike, and the tacky seductiveness of Roger Vadim circa “Barbarella.” Says co-writer Sawhill: “It’s ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ meets ‘The Matrix,’ only raunchier, and made for next to no money.”
And did we mention that THE FOLD is very funny?
Filmed in NYC, THE FOLD stars some of the best performers from New York City’s acting, downtown performance, and burlesque scenes, including Jake Thomas, Ampora McLean, Francesco Paladino, Josh Matthews, Karen Grenke, Jeremy Lawrence, Julie Atlas Muz, Porno Jim, Angela Lovell, Stephanie Sellars, Ramfis Myrthil, and Normandy Sherwood.
